The Rhine–Main–Danube Canal (German: Rhein-Main-Donau-Kanal; also called Main-Danube Canal, RMD Canal or Europa Canal), is a canal in Bavaria, Germany. Connecting the Main and the Danube rivers across the European Watershed , it runs from Bamberg via Nuremberg to Kelheim .

The Danube connects with the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal at Kelheim, with the Donaukanal in Vienna, and with the Danube–Black Sea Canal at Cernavodă. Apart from a couple of secondary navigable branches, the only major navigable rivers linked to the Danube are the Drava, Sava and Tisa.

Running from Bamberg via Nuremberg to Kelheim, the canal was built to provide a navigable artery for waterborne commerce between the Rhine delta (at Rotterdam in the Netherlands), and the Danube Delta in south-eastern Romania and south-western Ukraine.

The Canal links the Main river near Bamberg in Upper Franconia with the Danube near Kelheim in Lower Bavaria. The former is served by numerous regional trains and even the occasional ICE.
Four rivers meet in Regensburg: Naab, Regen, Danube and, although not a “real” river, the Main-Donal Canal. We took a look around Regensburg on the banks of the Danube and also took a boat trip on the famous Danube “Strudel”. A walk along the riverbank is really beautiful.
