Calkins grew up mainly in Buffalo, New York, and moved with her family to Newton, Massachusetts, in 1880.
Mary Whiton Calkins (/ ˈ k ɔː l k ɪ n z, ˈ k æ l-/; 30 March 1863 – 26 February 1930) was an American philosopher and psychologist, whose work informed theory and research of memory, dreams and the self. In 1903, Calkins was the twelfth in a listing of fifty psychologists with the most merit, chosen by her peers.
Mary Whiton Calkins was ready for an academic career before the patriarchal academic world of the late nineteenth century was ready for her. After earning an undergraduate degree in 1882 from Smith College in classics and philosophy, Calkins began to teach Greek at Wellesley College.
