Red Robin was founded in 1969. The first restaurant was opened near the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle, which offered gourmet hamburgers. It was very popular from the beginning.

Red Robin is owned by The Snyder Group Company. Snyder became a Red Robin franchisee in 1979 when Gerald Kingen sold Snyder the 10-year-old company and the rights to open a Red Robin in his hometown.
Gerald Kingen started Red Robin. The first restaurant was only 1,200 square-feet and was the preferred hangout spot for the University of Washington students. Gerald Kingen first operated the location like a pub but later added hamburgers to the menu.
Red Robin got its name from an old hit song in the 1920s. The original Red Robin stood at the southern end of the university in a building named Sam’s Tavern, and the owner Sam sang in a barbershop quartet and could frequently be heard singing this song “When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along).”
