Note: this is a mostly spoiler-free review of the second season of Flaked, which is available to stream on Netflix now.

Flaked is essentially the story of a pair of recovering alcoholics trying to overcome their perpetually self-sabotaging behavior and make a fresh start in life. I don't know that it was ever clear just how personal that story is to star/co-creator Will Arnett until he revealed in a Hollywood Reporter interview that he actually fell off the wagon while filming Season 1. That experience seems to have colored the development of the show's sophomore season. Flaked was always more absurdist dramedy than actual comedy, and if anything, the show has an even darker and bleaker tone in Season 2. But that shift in tone, as well as the leaner structure, wind up working in the show's favor. Season 2 winds up clicking in a way the first never really managed.

Season 2 picks up several months after we last saw Arnett's Chip, and he's predictably more miserable than ever after betraying his friends and community for fleeting personal gain. Now jobless, homeless and a pariah among the normally mellow citizens of Venice, Chip has nothing else to fall back upon apart from his relationship with London (Ruth Kearney). And if there was any one takeaway from the first season, it's that these two don't exactly have the most stable, healthy relationship. That's hardly changed now, with London increasingly seeking emotional guidance from New Age self-help guru Karel (Shawn Hatosy) and Chip falling back into old habits as he tries to make amends to jilted friends like Dennis (David Sullivan), George (Robert Wisdom) and Cooler (George Basil).

Season 2 takes a tighter, more focused than the first. Season 1 was already a relatively small-scale endeavor at eight episodes of roughly 30-40 minutes each, and Season 2 trims the episode count down to six. Each episode unfolds over the course of roughly a day, with the entire season chronicling one particularly painful and tumultuous week in Chip's life. There's definitely a narrower focus this time around, with these episodes rarely venturing outside the same core cast of characters for very long. That can sometimes be a hindrance, as some characters (particularly George) don't receive the screen time they deserve in these six episodes. But for the most part, the shorter format helps keep the show focused and moving along at a better clip than in Season 1. London joins in on Chip's favorite pastime.Though Chip is ostensibly the main character of the series, you can make a strong case that Season 1 was equally Dennis's story. There's not even room for debate now, as Dennis' shifting fortunes receive equal attention throughout these six episodes. That's a good thing, as the two characters tend to do a nice job of balancing each other out and preventing the drama from becoming overly dominated by Chip's stupid decision-making. Outwardly, Dennis is a more kindhearted and functional person than his former roommate, but these six episodes do a pretty thorough job of showcasing that both men are profoundly miserable and equally capable of self-destruction.

Flaked proves to be a stronger, more focused series in its second season, even if it doesn't improve on all the faults of the first. Not every character receives the attention they deserve, but the tag-team trio of actors Will Arnett, David Sullivan and George Basil makes for a moody but endearing story of three 40-something men finally learning to...
