On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 20% based on reviews from 5 critics. [4] TV Guide gave the film only one star out of four and stated: "At some point, Excessive Force, which lives up to its title, might have been envisioned as a taut, mysterious, high-action cop thriller.
Audience Member Definitely a so bad it's good movie. Definitely Thomas Ian Griffith trying to align himself with action stars like Segal, Van Damme and the like.

May 5, 2011 · The production value is surprisingly good for a movie starring Thomas Ian Griffith called EXCESSIVE FORCE. It feels almost on par with Andrew Davis’s movies, and not just because it also takes place in Chicago. It’s above competently made and watchable. But I think the plot is just too generic to stand out.

All of the right pieces were in place for a great film -- a solid cast, plot twists galore, and mainstream polish -- but after you tally all the points, Excessive Force feels a little conventional. There are good supporting performances and Griffith has the right amount of leading man swagger.
Christopher Armstead from Film Critics United gave the film mixed review: "Excessive Force is not a good movie and Thomas Ian Griffith did not become a big action star. That makes us sad, even though he's had a nice career.
