- Season 4, Episode 18 – “Where the Wild Things Are” Tonally one of the strangest episodes in the entire series. Its placement in the season is bizarre. The plot is nonsensical.

- Season 6, Episode 14 – “Older and Far Away” A really odd episode in the wider arc of Season Six, because it’s just kind of… there. It sits before the Xander/Anya shenanigans, and after the whole “Willow is a magic junkie” plot.
The Freshman IS a bit of S6-in-miniature where Buffy is overwhelmed and intimidated by college and is out of her element, but she quickly re-orients. But generally these are more isolated episodes since Buffy still has some surrounding structure in her life. S6 is where that structure breaks down.

The Freshman is about Buffy transitioning to college. The show gets significantly worse from here with the interchanging of the cast and writers of the show, with more of a female presence than before.
