Definitely worth visiting
- Taranaki has gotten a lot of exposure thanks to being named as Lonely Planet’s second best region in the world to visit in 2017. While these kinds of rankings don’t hold much sway on us, we do think that Taranaki is definitely worth visiting if you have the time and are not in a rush to get to the South Island like most.

Oct 16, 2017 · Tarananki is great – After heading there twice I feel the need to highly recommend going to visit. The region is around 3/4 hours drive from Wellington, or from Auckland and provides a little undiscovered section of the well traveled North Island that is super underrated.

- Climb Paritutu Rock. This volcanic outcrop sticks out like a sore thumb between the two New Plymouth beaches, Ngamotu Beach and Back Beach. Paritutu Rock begs to be climbed to get a view over New Plymouth and some of the Taranaki coastline.
- Check Out Dawson Falls. This is the most accessible waterfall in the Taranaki region and certainly one of the most impressive. Nestled in the Egmont National Park, Dawson Falls is a 10-minute walk through glorious native forest to these 18m (59ft) high falls!
