A Very British Coup is a 1982 novel by British Labour politician Chris Mullin. The novel has twice been adapted for television; as A Very British Coup in 1988 and as Secret State in 2012.

AVBC features a newly elected left-wing British PM and the first similarity between this and TWW is that both programmes start just after the newly elected Prime Minister (Harry Perkins) and President (you know who) take office, with nothing to show how such a seemingly unelectable person (at that time) could ever defeat any right-wing or even middle-of-the-road opponent.

A Very British Coup is a 1988 British political serial adapted from Chris Mullin's 1982 novel A Very British Coup in 1988 by screenwriter Alan Plater and director Mick Jackson. Starring Ray McAnally , the series was first screened on Channel 4 and won Bafta and Emmy awards, and was screened in more than 30 countries.
Although a little dated by now, I have watched and re-watched this engrossing and still scary look at a time in British politics which still has relevance. The intrigues, back-stabbing, foreign interferences, and cynical take on politicians and power are far too familiar to us even today in 2022.
By 1988, when this superb drama was made, Thatcher was still there but the adaptation, with now great foresight as current events show, made more of Perkins rise being due to uncovering massive scandal and criminality in big finance.
