This is a mostly spoiler-free review of Reign of the Supermen, which is now available on Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack.
Last year's The Death of Superman proved to be a generic addition to DC's lineup of direct-to-DVD animated movies, failing to add much to a story that had already been told once before in 2007's Superman: Doomsday. The good news is that its sequel, Reign of the Supermen, is given more room in which to carve its own identity. Unfortunately, that's still not enough to help it measure up to the best of these animated adaptations.
As Jim Vejvoda noted in his review of The Death of Superman, there's a very "been there, done that" quality to the Superman/Doomsday rivalry, with variations of that story playing out in both the animated and live-action realm in recent years. Reign of the Supermen focuses on the part of that story we haven't really seen told outside the comics. Picking up six months after the events of The Death of Superman, this film explores the rise of four new heroes in Metropolis - teen clone Superboy (Cameron Monaghan), armored hero Steel (Cress Williams), a ruthless vigilante known as The Eradicator (Charles Halford) and the mysterious Cyborg Superman (Jerry O'Connell and Patrick Fabian). Can any of these newcomers fill the void left by Superman, especially as a threat even greater than Doomsday looms over Metropolis?
That's not to say there aren't a few moments that resonate on a deeper level. Some of the early moments featuring Superman mainstays like Lois Lane (Rebecca Romijn) and Perry White (Rocky Carroll) grieving over the late Man of Steel. There's also a charming scene involving Lois and Wonder Woman (Rosario Dawson) bonding over their mutual status as Superman love interests. It's enough to make you wish that The Death of Superman wasn't the first dedicated Superman entry of the DC Universe Movies, so that these basic relationships could have already been established.
One thing these DC Universe Movies can be counted on to provide is strong action scenes. There's plenty of that to go around in this sequel, whether it's rival Supermen butting heads in Metropolis or multiple heroes joining forces to battle a potentially world-ending threat in the climax. These movies have never stood out in terms of animation style, but at least the scope and intensity of the action makes up for that lack of style.
Reign of the Supermen is a squarely "middle of the pack" addition to DC's ever-growing lineup of animated movies. It's definitely an improvement on last year's The Death of the Superman, focusing on the part of this story that hasn't been told and retold ad nauseum. Reign of the Supermen is a 2019 American animated superhero film produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment. The film is a direct sequel to The Death of Superman (2018) and is based on the comic book story arc of the same name in "The Death of Superman" event.
8/10. Far better than expected. aodhanmulholland14 20 January 2019. Not the best DC animated movie but it's entertaining that's for sure. Great action and good enough story line. However the use of the justice League was woeful and there wasn't much character depth. But at least for once Lois Lane is actually interesting!
