Pocatello ( / ˈpoʊkəˈtɛloʊ / ⓘ) is the county seat and largest city of Bannock County, [4] with a small portion on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in neighboring Power County, containing the city's airport.

The name "Pocatello" comes from an Indian chief of the Shoshone tribe who granted the railroad a right-of-way through the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. Shoshone and Bannock Indian tribes inhabited southeastern Idaho for hundreds of years before the epic trek by Lewis and Clark across Idaho in 1805.

Named after a noted 19th-century Shoshoni chief, Pocatello is a working-class town with a strong railroad and trade union heritage. As such it has more of a blue-collar feel to it than the other major Idaho cities. At one time the city boasted the largest rail yard west of the Mississippi River.
