Julia Prinsep Stephen (née Jackson; formerly Duckworth; 7 February 1846 – 5 May 1895) was an English Pre-Raphaelite model and philanthropist. She was the wife of the biographer Leslie Stephen and mother of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, members of the Bloomsbury Group.
Because Virginia’s mother, Julia Duckworth Stephen, died unexpect-edly when Virginia was only thirteen, and because her surrogate mother, her half-sister Stella, died tragically only two years later, Virginia’s psychical need to probe motherhood, and daughterhood, was especially urgent.

Foreword. Searching for the elusive Julia Prinsep Stephen. I first discovered Julia Stephen in the pages of a novel - To the Lighthouse by her daughter, Virginia Woolf. I was sitting on a balcony at Talland House in St Ives, Cornwall. This had been the Stephen family’s happy holiday home for 12 years, from 1882.
