The Burke and Hare murders were a series of sixteen murders committed over a period of about ten months in 1828 in Edinburgh, Scotland. They were undertaken by William Burke and William Hare, who sold the corpses to Robert Knox for dissection at his anatomy lectures.
Burke and Hare took the body to Edinburgh University under the cover of darkness. They were hoping to find an assistant of the famous surgeon Professor Alexander Monro to sell it to. Instead, a student directed them to the premises of Dr Robert Knox, another well-known surgeon and anatomist.
