Former slave and Union Army sergeant Buck becomes a self-employed wagon master to wagon trains of freed slaves heading West. Buck knows the region well and he charges fair wages from the wagon trains employing him.
Following the end of the Civil War, soldier-turned-trail-guide Buck (Sidney Poitier) makes a living by helping former slaves find settlements in the West.

Buck and Preacher, who keeps a large pistol hidden in his Bible, kill their enemies, although two of the gang members, who are in the saloon, escape. Floyd, Deshay's nephew, and the other rider join the sheriff's posse in pursuit of Buck and Preacher, but the two black men elude them.

The opening credits sequence sets the tone, with jazz legend Benny Carter’s bluesy, harmonica-inflected score and a montage of grainy, sepia-toned stills depicting nineteenth-century wagon trains and Black pioneers.
A superbly crafted revisionist landmark, Buck and the Preacher subverts Hollywood conventions at every turn and reclaims the western genre in the name of Black liberation.
