Many of the farms in the area produced dairy, which made Kent an attractive location for Smith Brothers Farm to establish their business in 1920. Kent also became known for growing lettuce. From 1934 – 1938, Kent held an annual Lettuce Festival celebrating Kent as the Lettuce Capital of the World.

Unfortunately, the hops planted also ended up suffering from a blight. After hops, Kent became know for its lettuce and during the 20s and 30s earned the title of “Lettuce Capital of the World.”
