The school opened in 1878 as a free kindergarten, founded by Felix Adler at the age of 24. In 1880, elementary grades were added, and the school was then called the Workingman's School. At that time, the idea that the children of the poor should be educated was innovative.
Fieldston Middle serves students in 6th through 8th Grades. These years are filled with transition, and our focus is on supporting students’ social and emotional learning. Our instructional methods are rooted in our commitment to academic excellence, progressive education, and ethical learning.
In 1995, the New York Society for Ethical Culture voted to set up the School as its own legal entity with a self-governing board of trustees. The school has its origins in the Free Kindergarten, founded in Manhattan by Felix Adler in 1878. Soon after, the school expanded its grade levels and became the Workingman's School in an effort to provide education to the city's underprivileged children.
