In 1992, the Privy Council granted Queen Margaret College powers to award its own taught degrees, and in 1998, the college was granted full degree powers, which enabled it to award its own research and higher degrees. In 2007 the college was granted full university status and became Queen Margaret University Edinburgh. The university is named after Queen Margaret of Scotland who reigned from 1286 to 1290. This name was chosen as the queen was considered to embody the university’s key values – serving the community and enhancing the quality of life.
