On 1 November 2018, Underworld started a year-long experimental music-and-video project named Drift, which aimed to release the band's new and previously unreleased material on a weekly basis. The full album titled Drift Series 1 was released on 1 November 2019, and concluded the band's 52 week Drift project. [32]
In 2006, Underworld began to explore the emerging possibilities of the Internet and direct selling when they released the Riverrun series. Ever the innovators, the band were one of the first major acts to release music solely in the digital market.

- What did your parents do for a living when you were a kid, and what do they think of what you do for a living now? Smith: My mother was a piano teacher.
- What was distinctive about where you grew up that shaped you as a musician? Smith: We both came from small towns in different parts of Wales. Like most young people, I dreamed of going where the grass was greener — which is difficult to beat in Wales because the grass is as green as you can possibly get.
