Case Western Reserve was established after Western Reserve University —which was founded in 1826 and named for its location in the Connecticut Western Reserve —and Case Institute of Technology —which was founded in 1880 through the endowment of Leonard Case Jr. —formally federated in 1967.
Western Reserve College was founded in Hudson, Ohio, in 1826. It moved to Cleveland in 1882, changing its name to Western Reserve University. Case School of Applied Science was established in 1880 and moved to a location adjacent to Western Reserve in 1883. The name was changed to Case Institute of Technology in 1947.
