Punta da Estaca de Bares is the northernmost point of Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, at a latitude of 43° 47′ 38″ North. It is located in Galicia. Conventionally, it marks the western end of the Cantabrian Sea, or Bay of Biscay, in the North Atlantic ocean.
The Cape of Bares is reputedly a great birding site, particularly during the September-December migrating season. Our one regret was not having more time to explore the area. We caught only glimpses of the pre-roman wharf of Bares and the town of O Barqueiro, both of which seemed charming.

These waters do not freeze because the Gulf Stream flows through them, warm waters that prevent the waters of Estaca de Bares from turning to ice. Looking north we will see the islets of Sigüelos. Punta da Estaca de Bares. Spain, Europe. Top choice in Rías Altas. From the lighthouse near the tip pf the Bares peninsula, a 500m trail follows the spine of a rock outcrop to the Punta da Estaca de Bares, Spain's most northerly point, with awe-inspiring cliffs and fabulous panoramas.
