Junius Richard Jayewardene (1906-1996) was a leader of the nationalist movement in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) who served in a variety of cabinet positions in the decades after independence. In 1977, he became prime minister, and then president, of Sri Lanka.
Junius Richard Jayewardene was a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician, who went on to serve as the second President of Sri Lanka and remains one of the most influential political leaders in the history of the country. He was born in a privileged family and his father was the Chief Justice of the country.
Junius Richard Jayewardene was born 17-9-1906 to the lawyer and later Chief Justice Eugene Wilfred Jayewardene and his wife Agnes Helen. The eldest of eleven children, he as educated at Royal College, Colombo.
