Keane was born in Stockport in Greater Manchester and is Irish-qualified via his father. He is the twin brother of Everton and England central defender Michael Keane.

Keane worked his way through the levels and became a regular starter at U18 level before progressing with the reserves. He won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award for the 09/10 season. Keane then made his senior debut against Blackburn in December 2011 but a knee ligament injury halted his momentum.
Keane was loaned out to Wigan Athletic but injury once again halted his progress. Multiple loan moves followed — notably to EFL Play-Off winners QPR in 2014 — before he found a permanent home at Hull City in 2016. Keane was shipped out to Ipswich Town — whom he would later join — but was ultimately released in mid-2020. He returned to Wigan on a short-term deal — which has since been prolonged — and has somewhat found his feet at the club, netting 14 times.
The 28-year-old did not represent Ireland at underage level, instead playing for England’s U21s and changing his allegiance years later in 2019. He looks set to tog out with the Boys In Green for the first time, 18 months after that decision.
