Jun 30, 1974 · SHREVEPORT, La., June 29 (AP) — Frank Sutton, who played the tough Marine Corps Sergeant Carter in the “Gomer Pyle” television series, died last night at the age of 51.
As the antagonistic, in-your-face Sgt. Vince Carter, whose outer bluster occasionally revealed a softer inner core, the 41-year-old Sutton finally found himself front and center co-starring in one of sitcomdom's most successful spin-offs-- Gomer Pyle: USMC (1964) , the offspring of The Andy Griffith Show (1960) .

Corporal Chuck Boyle works under Sergeant Carter after Nicholas Cuccinelli. Boyle usually serves as Carter's conscience, making Carter treat Gomer civilly, even if it means that Gomer will continue under his beloved sergeant.
