Nov 13, 2019 · Physicians James Carroll, Aristides Agramonte y Simoni and Jesse William Lazear served on the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission under Reed’s direction. Carroll volunteered to become a test subject himself. Lazear died from yellow fever in 1900.
Aristides Agramonte y Simoni (June 3, 1868 – August 19, 1931) was a Cuban American physician, pathologist and bacteriologist with expertise in tropical medicine. In 1898 George Miller Sternberg appointed him as an Acting Assistant Surgeon in the U.S. Army and sent him to Cuba to study a yellow fever outbreak. [1]
Known officially as the United States Army Yellow Fever Commission, it was known simply as the Reed Commission for Major Reed, who was the chairman of the four-man body that included three other specialists in infectious disease: James Carroll, Aristides Agramonte, and Jesse W. Lazear, all of whom were contract doctors for the Army.

Jun 29, 2021 · In May 1900, Reed was ordered to Havana and put in charge of the newly created Yellow Fever Commission. His team was composed of U.S. Army acting assistant surgeons. English-born James Carroll, who had a medical degree from the University of Maryland, was in charge of bacteriology.

The commission included Lazear; Dr. Aristides Agramonte, acting assistant U.S. Army surgeon; and Dr. James Carroll, an 1891 UMSOM graduate who served as second in command. The commission visited Finlay to learn about his theories and studies and was gifted mosquito larvae from him.
