They formed in 1965 around guitarist Danny Kalb, bassist Andy Kulberg, guitarist/singer Steve Katz, drummer Roy Blumenfeld and, soon after, singer Tommy Flanders. The band’s name was borrowed from an Elektra Records compilation album, The Blues Project, for which Kalb had contributed two songs the previous year.
