Feb 13, 2013 · The caduceus is the symbol of the Greek god Hermes, and is used to represent commerce. The AVMA House of Delegates voted in June 1970 to replace the symbol, and the current logo was first displayed on the cover and in the pages of the Jan. 1, 1971, issue of JAVMA.
Although the Rod of Asclepius is considered the more “correct” symbol of healing and medicine, the Caduceus is now widely understood to symbolize healthcare as well. With the superimposed V, either will mean “veterinary medicine” to most people. The logos with veterinary medical emblems show both the Rod of Asclepius and the Caduceus.
