Will Geer (born William Aughe Ghere; March 9, 1902 – April 22, 1978) was an American actor, musician, and social activist, who was active in labor organizing and other movements in New York and Southern California in the 1930s and 1940s.
Geer was an early boyfriend of Harry Hay, the Los Angeles Communist and radical who founded America's first large-scale gay activist organization, the Mattachine Society. Changed his last name from Ghere to Geer because it was simpler to spell.

Long before he founded Theatricum Botanicum, Indiana native Will Geer was well-known for his work on the New York stage, in film, and on radio. By the mid-1950’s, he had relocated permanently to California and had established a successful Hollywood career. His future looked bright.
