Dec 12, 2008 · Van Johnson, whose boyish looks and earnest manner made him a Hollywood heartthrob in the 1940s and '50s, died Friday in an assisted-care facility, a friend told CNN.
Van Johnson is a Navy pilot in WWII who has been shot down in the Pacific on a bombing mission. He and a wounded comrade are the only survivors and are lost at sea. As they await rescue, Van Johnson recounts his life story and romance with girlfriend June Allyson. It's a wonderful wholesome movie that the whole family will enjoy.

Van Johnson. Actor. 24 August 1916 to 12 December 2008. A handsome Hollywood leading man who emerged during the war years, Johnson was an engaging presence in light comedies and melodramas. His best work came in such films as A Guy Named Joe (1943), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), The Caine Mutiny (1954) and The End of the Affair (1955).
