May 20, 2024 · In 1936 the Gibbes Museum of Art presented the first formal exhibition of Solomon R. Guggenheim’s collection of modern art. Featuring works by Marc Chagall, Vasily Kandinsky, and Fernand Leger, among many others, the show brought international attention to Charleston. In 1938 the Gibbes again presented Guggenheim’s collection.
