The Women of Brewster Place is American author Gloria Naylor ’s debut novel that was first published in 1982. The novel interweaves the stories of seven Black women living in an inner-city tenement called Brewster Place that is also their sanctuary as it poignantly captures their struggles, strengths, and hopes.

Mattie Michael. The most important character in the novel. Mattie moves to Brewster Place late in life, after her son abandons her and forces her to lose her home. Mattie quickly becomes a surrogate mother to several of the women in the housing complex, offering love and support to women who, like her, have only one another to rely on.
She received her BA in English from Brooklyn College and her MA in Afro-American Studies from Yale University. Her first novel, The Women of Brewster Place, won the National Book Award for first fiction in 1983. She is also the author of Linden Hills (available from Penguin), Mama Day, Bailey's Cafe, and The Men of Brewster Place.
