Joseph Pitton de Tournefort serait en fait né un peu avant la date du 3 juin 1656 car les registres de la paroisse Saint-Sauveur d' Aix-en-Provence précisent qu'il a reçu le baptême le 3 juin 1656 1, 2. Sa famille est originaire de Tours. Son arrière-grand-père a eu deux fils : Louis Pitton, grand-père de Joseph.
