For the workers who lived in Pullman, the cuts in wages and the high rents of 1893-94 were merely short-term manifestations of long-term grievances, all of them tied to company president George Pullman’s philosophy of industrial paternalism.
The Pullman strike occurred in May and June of 1894. Members of workers presented grievances of low wages, poor living conditions, and 16 hour work days to Pullman. He refused to meet with them and fired them. The delegation voted to strike and walk off the job.
Students will identify the benefits and costs of living in Pullman’s company town. Students will examine primary sources in order to understand the causes of the Pullman Strike of 1894. Students will read the testimony of participants in the Pullman Strike to determine the strike’s impact on railroad workers and organized labor.
