The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec ( CALQ) is a public agency founded in 1994 by the government of Quebec . CALQ offers support and funding for art projects in the performing arts, multidisciplinary arts, circus arts, visual arts, media arts, architectural research, arts and crafts, and literature.

Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, norsk Ordenen for kunst og litteratur, er en fransk orden, som tildeles av det franske kulturdepartementet for å belønne «dem som har utmerket seg gjennom kreativitet innen kunst eller litteratur eller gjennom bidrag som har spredt fransk kunst og litteratur i verden».
Barnes was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1988, Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1995 and Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2004. In 1993 he was awarded the Shakespeare Prize by the FVS Foundation and in 2004 won the Austrian State Prize for European Literature.
