He labored on the task for 27 years, fashioning a masterpiece that Michelangelo called "truly worthy to be the Gates of Paradise" for its remarkable beauty and grandeur.

Apr 21, 2021 · Introduction. Born in, or just outside, Florence c . 1380, Lorenzo Ghiberti probably trained in the shop of a goldsmith. He established himself, in the early 15th century, as one of the most skilled bronze/brass sculptors on the Italian peninsula; indeed, he reinvigorated the art of casting metal sculpture in Florence.
Lorenzo Ghiberti, (born c. 1378, Pelago—died Dec. 1, 1455, Florence), Italian sculptor, goldsmith, and designer active in Florence. He was trained as a goldsmith and painter. In 1402 he won a competition for the commission to make a pair of bronze doors for the Baptistery of Florence Cathedral, defeating Filippo Brunelleschi.
ABOUT LORENZO GHIBERTI Lorenzo Ghiberti (Italian, 1378–1455) was one of the most influential artists of the Early Renaissance. He was the son of a goldsmith, from whom he learned the craft. Ghiberti’s first commission for the Florence Baptistery did not come by luck, but rather by skill.

The Florentine artist also made heads of himself and his son Vittorio on the doors. The name of Ghiberti’s doors, ‘The Gates of Paradise’, was coined by Michelangelo (1475-1564).
