Smathers Beach – Key West. Key West’s manmade strand, built with sand brought in from the Bahamas in 1961, offers a rare stretch of white sand among the Keys’ otherwise-rocky shores. Paradise on Key West. I was here on a Monday and it was quite empty. Much better than the Fort Zachary Taylor State Park which is filled with tourists, trash and people lying next to each other. About Smathers Beach. Smathers Beach is a man-made stretch of coastline off the southern shore of Key West, Florida. It was developed in the early 1960s and is named after a former US Senator, George Smathers. It's said that the soft white sand was brought from the Bahamas. Today, it's the longest stretch of shoreline in the Florida Keys.

Apparently there are not many beaches in Key West, but this is one of the two largest. The beach was nearly deserted at that hour. It was difficult to find, but perhaps that's a bonus.
