He studied there for four years, focusing on physics and mathematics but also taking courses in literature and history.

Afaik TUM has a wider range of courses and is in general bigger department than ETH (but I can be wrong on this). If you really (!) want to go into research I would still pick ETH, since it is a bigger name on international stage...
