Roland Tanner. Buchan, Alexander Stewart, 1st earl of [S] (d. c.1406). Lord of Badenoch. The fourth son of Robert II, he was made a justiciar in northern Scotland (1372), in which post he earned his nickname of ‘Wolf of Badenoch’. He became earl of Buchan in 1382 as a result of his marriage to Euphemia, countess of Ross.
Earl of Mar. (58) ALEXANDER STEWART, son of ALEXANDER, Earl of Buchan (S.) , married 1404 Isabel, Countess of Mar and Garioch. He was in command of the Royal forces at the battle of Harlaw in 1411. In 1426 he was created EARL OF MAR (S.), with remainder to his natural son, Sir Thomas Stewart, who died in his father´s lifetime. The Earl died 1435.
