The cemetery is located in Center Township (S half of the SW quadrant of Section 17, Township 15N, Range 4E) on the northeast corner of the intersection of Churchman Avenue and E Raymond Street. Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 1, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (02 April 2005), gives the primary cemetery name as New Crown Cemetery.
The first public cemetery in Indianapolis was established in 1821. Called the City Cemetery, it was located on Kentucky Avenue near the White River. In 1834, Union Cemetery was established on the eastern border of the City Cemetery and, circa 1838, the Greenlawn addition was made.

Greenlawn Cemetery was established in 1821, as part of the original layout of the city of Indianapolis. It was located along the White River just north of what would later become Kentucky Avenue. [1] Greenlawn was the initial burial place of over 1100 Hoosier pioneers, 1200 Union soldiers and 1600 Confederate prisoners of war. [1]
