"Filippo Maria Visconti" published on by null. (1392–1447),Third duke of Milan. He became nominal ruler of Pavia in 1402, and succeeded his brother Giovanni Maria, the second duke, in 1412.
After his death the Visconti territories passed to Giovanni Maria Visconti, whose rule was so violent and corrupt that he was assassinated in 1412. Decembrio was born in Ferrara but spent most of the first half of the fifteenth century serving as a secretary to Duke Filippo Maria Visconti and then to the Ambrosian Republic.

One of the decks, known as The Visconti Tarot, was probably made for Filippo Maria Visconti, the last duke of Milan of that name, prior to his death in 1447. The other deck, known as The Visconti-Sforza Tarot , was more than likely made for Francesco Sforza, a mercenary commander who married the only child of Filippo Maria Visconti.
House of Sforza (1st rule). After the death of Filippo Maria in 1447, the main line of Visconti went extinct. Benefited by political chaos, a cabal of wealthy citizens, academics and clerics declared the Duchy dissolved and proclaimed the oligarchical Golden Ambrosian Republic.
