The famous Beat, Jack Kerouac, first used the idiom ‘beat’ in 1948 while he was talking to John Clellon Holmes: “So I guess you might say we’re a beat generation” (Asher). The four original Beats, Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassidy, and William Burroughs all banded together in the late 1940’s.

Dec 22, 2015 · Allen Ginsberg. Ginsberg is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and prominent of the Beat Poets. His 112 line poem, “Howl”, was considered obscene at the time, which lead to the arrest its publisher, Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The case went to trial, but eventually, “Howl” triumphed in its challenge to the obscenity laws of the day.
