A genial, well-respected, all-around "nice guy", the breezily handsome Barry Nelson was born Haakon Robert Nielsen on April 16, 1917, in San Francisco, California, to Betsy (Christophersen) and Trygve "Ted" Nielsen, both Norwegian immigrants. He was raised in nearby Oakland and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1941.
From that point on, Barry was off and running, appearing in an ongoing torrent of films and TV shows, in addition to plays, like a 1953 production of "The Pink Elephant," which she starred in on Broadway. She was even nominated for an Emmy for her performance as Jordan Baker in a "Playhouse 90" (CBS, 1956-1961) production of "The Great Gatsby."
Apr 7, 2007 · While serving in the Army, Nelson made his Broadway debut in the morale-boosting Moss Hart play Winged Victory, repeating his role (and his billing of Corporal Barry Nelson) in the 1944 film version. Full stardom came Nelson's way in such Broadway productions of the 1950s and 1960s as The Rat Race, The Moon is Blue and Cactus Flower.
