Facts. Minnelli first met Judy Garland during the filming for Strike Up the Band (1940). They both married on June 15, 1945 inside Garland's mother's house in Wilshire, Los Angeles. They had one child, Liza May Minnelli (born 1946). The marriage fractured during the filming for The Pirate (1948). In 1949, Minnelli and Garland temporarily separated.
Vincente Minnelli was celebrated for bringing new levels of sophistication to the movie musical in the 1940s and 1950s. While such musicals as Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) and An American in Paris (1951) made his name, Minnelli also directed highly regarded dramas, including the Hollywood story The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), and frothy comedies.
