Samuel Drake was born in Pontefract in 1687 or 1688, [1] although some older sources give the earlier date of c. 1686. [2] He was baptised on 23 April 1688, the son of Francis Drake, vicar of Pontefract, and elder brother of the historian Francis Drake. [1] His grandfather was Samuel Drake, the Anglican divine.
