Dance in the Country was part of a set of three paintings; La danse à la ville, La danse à Bougival, and La danse à la campagne commissioned in 1883 by Paul Durand-Ruel, one of Renoir's greatest supporters. Dance in the country is the only painting depicting a smiling woman which was very significant in Renoir's work.
