More soil was removed from the foundations, and counterweights were added. The lean was corrected by 44cm, and the tower reopened to the public in spring 2001.

Di Simone continued building in 1272. To mitigate the tilt, the engineers built upper stories with one edge higher than the other. As a result, the tower is bent.
