One novel by Mitchell was published during her lifetime, the American Civil War-era novel, Gone with the Wind, for which she won the National Book Award for Most Distinguished Novel of 1936 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937.
Gone with the Wind is a historical fiction told in simple language from an omniscient perspective and also with heavily accented vernacular from most of the characters. The book is rich in themes of war, the uncomfortable issue of race, slavery, social class, human nature, and gender dynamics.
When my grandma passed away my dad and I cleaned out her garage and there were so many books. One of the ones I picked to take with me was Gone With the Wind and I read it for the first time in 6th grade. A whole lot of that book went over my head but I like to reread it every couple of years.
