Mo State was founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School with the primary purpose of educating teachers for the public school system. Programs in the arts and sciences were added in the 1940s. By 1972, the college was offering undergraduate and graduate degrees and changed its name to Southwest Missouri State University as a result.
