  3. Entamoeba histolytica is a parasitic amoeba belonging to the phylum Sarcomastigophora, which has an environmentally resistant infectious stage, known as a cyst. In the intestine, cysts undergo excystation, and the intestinal stage, known as a trophozoite, is released and begins to multiply asexually.
