You would have heard "ya ali" or "ya ali madad". "ya ali madad" means O Ali help. Much like the christians might invoke mary or jesus when faced with difficulty. None of this is based in islam. It's just traditions that people have made up. Ali cannot help you, because he lives and he dies. Only Allah can help you because He lives and does not die.
