In 1872 Dordrecht got its first railway station with connections to Breda and Roosendaal in the South. Later in the same year the link with Rotterdam towards the North was established as well. As Dordrecht is on an island, construction of railway bridges across the main waterways was the biggest challenge of the operation.

It was the first city in the west of the Netherlands to get City Rights. In 1572 the Dutch Dukes under Willem van Oranien declared their independence from Spain in Dordrecht.
