For me, Mahler's 5th symphony is an emotional journey done in distinct steps. I actually use it when I get stuck in a really foul and depressed mood. When I'm that distressed, listening to happy music is too dissonant to my mood and it just makes me angrier. Listening to angry or sad music often leaves me in the same emotional rut.

It was written in the summers of 1901 and 1902, during which time the composer experienced some of the greatest highs and lows of his lifetime.
